Monitoring HVAC equipment

One of the biggest environmental causes of data centre downtime is high temperatures, followed by humidity. Temperature sensors notify Room Alert users to the subtle temperature changes that can ultimately lead to server failure and data loss. Some of our users have even installed Digital Active Power w/Temperature Sensors on their HVAC equipment to signal them if they are suddenly without power.

HVAC failure is one of the foremost causes of rising data centre temperatures, so being notified that HVAC units are no longer powered helps provide an extra layer of protection to prevent data centre downtime.

On the opposite end of the scale, users in colder regions are also enlisting the Digital Active Power w/Temperature Sensor to monitor HVAC units for heating as well. Frozen pipes have led to a large number of recent water leak situations, so ensuring that your heating units are performing correctly goes a long way to protecting your business critical hardware against water damage (installing flood sensors isn’t a bad idea, either).

Keeping a watchful eye on the power status of your HVAC equipment can also save you money. One of our customers discovered that a larger HVAC unit was continuously cycling on and off, causing a huge drain on their power facilities. They instructed their maintenance crew to clean the unit while also following some proactive maintenance steps. The unit began to cycle far less frequently, lowering its power consumption as well as reducing the general wear and tear on its own critical components.
